Bayern Munich Follow Up Lewandowski Contract Extension by Tying Down Key Defender Until 2018

Bayern Munich right-back Rafinha has signed a new deal with club, keeping him at the Bundesliga giants until 2018.

Bayern revealed the news via Twitter, with Rafinha now set to extend his spell at the club. The Brazilian joined the side back in 2011 from Serie A team Genoa, having previously played for Bayern’s rivals Schalke.

“I’m very pleased about the contract extension. I’ve been here for almost six years. FC Bayern is like a second family to me and it’s one of the best clubs in the world,”” Rafinha told Bayern’s official club website.

“I want to win as many more trophies with FC Bayern as possible.”

“Rafinha is important to us out on the field of play, but he is also much loved in the dressing room,” Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added.

The 31-year-old has largely featured as a backup to Bayern captain Philipp Lahm, but he has still managed to rack up 124 league appearances for the current Bundesliga champions, scoring three goals and winning the league four times, as well as the Champions League in 2013.

This contract extension comes three days after the announcement of a new deal for Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski, who is set to stay in Munich until 2021. Both will hope to be involved when Bayern take on Darmstadt in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
