Barcelona’s late draw at Villarreal featured an incredible top bins free-kick from Leo Messi.
It also saw some extraordinary scenes at full time as Barcelona defender Gerard Pique went to the stands to attack La Liga president Javier Tebas.
The 1-1 draw against the Yellow Submarine was another disappointing result for Barcelona at the start of 2017 after they had lost 2-1 at Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey.
At 1-0 down, with 20 minutes to go Villarreal committed a clear handball in the box. Bruno dived down to block a Leo Messi shot with his hand.
It was a 100% penalty appeal and according to Barcelona would have allowed them a quicker way back into the match that they needed to win.
The 1-1 draw at Villarreal leaves Barcelona five points behind Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. Los Blancos have a game in hand.
“Did you see that? Yes you!”
Increasingly, there is a line of thought from Barcelona fans – and perhaps some players as well – that La Liga are helping Real Madrid to win the title, having gone so long without it.
After the game, Pique headed to the side of the pitch and pointed at the directors box, towards La Liga president Javier Tebas.
Pique said: “Did you see that? Yes you!” referring to the penalty decision that was not given.
After the game, Pique referenced two penalty decisions he felt should have gone Barcelona’s way.
Javier Tebas is a Real Madrid fan
In November, Javier Tebas, the head of La Liga, admitted he was a Real Madrid fan to AS.
Tebas: “If I say I don’t support [Madrid], then that would be hypocritical and I would be painted as a liar… And I certainly don’t like to be called a liar. Imagine if I said that I loved all teams, and then it came out that I supported Madrid since I was a boy, went to 27 Clasicos in the past, that I celebrated Madrid wins with friends in a bar. I prefer to call it as it is.”
